In recent years the identity of the Home Economics Room, especially that in a female college, had been at risk of being obsolete because the utilitarian focus does not synchronize with the career ambitions of the students. On top of endowing the students with essential life skills, the Home Economics Room must demonstrate the appeal of food and fashion in terms of leisure, well-being, and healthy lifestyle.
Our design repositions the traditional assembly line and kitchen setting into an uplifting atelier and café. The casual and youthful aura allows the students to be better engaged and to cultivate their culinary and embroidery skills. In terms of functionality, the layout and equipment are at the standard of a professional demonstration kitchen, which open up many more possibilities in cuisine and innovation. At the end of the culinary classroom, a barista bar and Chinese tea corner provide an immersive environment for students to learn about beverage preparation. This corner can be isolated with a sliding partition for small group activities. Students travelling along the corridor are drawn by the atypical signage against a school backdrop and can peek into this café-like shopfront.
In the adjacent sewing room, the minimal design envisioned a bright and clean atelier space that allows student to focus on handcrafting; as well as a space to display their works.
