Following the acquisition of a new space on Duddell Street, AmCham was seeking a new identity for its venue and branding, at a timely juncture when the future of workplace was disrupted by Covid and global work-from-home trend. Can a workplace transform to serve as a members’ club, to hold meetings, events, lectures and even parties? Can one fit 6,000 sqft of programme into 1,800 sqft of space?
The design team sees the compact space not as a constraint but as an opportunity for flexibility and sustainability. The Community Hub begins with the central pantry to present a welcoming and collaborative ambience upon arrival. Stepping further into the space, one discovers the periphery zone, nicknamed the Porch, is a series of flexible spaces that enjoys natural light and panoramic views of Central. The open plan of the Porch normally serves as a lounge where people can work or relax; but beneath the surface is a meticulous system of lighting, air conditioning, electricity and AV provisions that are programmed to a number of room and furniture settings. The ease of transformation and synchronization of technology to use-cases improve user experience, management, and energy saving throughout the day.
Hyper metropolitan density is more pronounced in Asia than the rest of the world, and compactness is a key contributor to efficiency and sustainability. The idea of proximity, when handled with care, is a positive driver for team dynamics, business relations, and community bonding, all of which are fundamental to the future of work.
